The aim of the Race is 'To enable young people of all nations to race together at sea under sail'.

Tall Ships' Race 2007

The Tall Ships Race (previously The Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race) is an annual event run by the charity Sail Training International, based in Gosport, Hampshire. The purpose of the race is to provide young people the chance to go to sea, under sail and enjoy friendly competition among the sail training fleet from around the world!

The race develops international friendship and understanding among the young trainees (aged between 15-25 years) and the communities visited during the races.

Taking part in one leg will go towards The Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Residential Award. There are berths for those aged over 25 years, so don’t worry!

Taking part in a Tall Ships Race is a life-changing experience. Young people find inner strengths they never knew they had, they are called upon to help with all aspects of sailing the ship including cleaning the heads (loo’s) and standing watch all night in all weathers.

For those who want to, they can go aloft (climb the rigging), steer the ship and learn about navigation and the stars.

Trainees quickly find they form an allegiance with their vessel and its crew and feel a great sense of pride as they sail into port, where the celebrations start. Much they have to celebrate too as many will have survived the challenge of their first Tall Ships Race.

As they head back to ‘normal life’, trainees will recall their experiences and remember the friendships made that will definitely last a lifetime.

Trainees are accepted from the age of 15 - 25 years but there are always berths for those who are older. Each vessel must have half its crew under 25 years in order to participate.
